What is a neck lift?

A neck lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reverses signs of neck aging. The goal is to make your neck look more taut and youthful. Removing saggy skin and fat that has accumulated below your jawline will also give you a more aesthetically pleasing profile. The procedure may involve tightening your neck muscles if they are causing you to have unsightly neckbands. With a fast recovery and hidden scars, neck rejuvenation provides a visible reduction in physical “aging” while still appearing natural.

Am I a good candidate for neck lift surgery?

Over time, you may develop neck wrinkles, a double chin, “turkey neck”, or a jowly appearance.

Your neck muscles may also loosen, resulting in neckbands and a gaunt appearance. If you are concerned that sagging jowls, neckbands, or a double chin are making you look older than you would like, then you may be a candidate for neck rejuvenation.

The best way to determine if you are suitable for a neck lift (or other anti-aging procedures) is to come in for a consultation. Boca Raton plastic surgeon, Dr. Horn, will examine your neck and lower face to determine if a neck lift will provide the results you are seeking. In some cases, he may suggest a neck lift combined with a facelift for best results. Not everyone needs both.

How should I prepare for neck lift surgery?

Before surgery, you will be asked about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking. Certain medications, supplements, and vitamins may need to be halted to ensure a safe surgery. You will be asked to abstain from nicotine in all forms, including tobacco and vapor products, starting at least two weeks before your procedure. Smoking is proven to interfere with the healing process. The complications caused by nicotine can be fatal. Since general anesthesia is usually administered, you must arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home, as you will be unable to drive yourself home following surgery.

What should I expect during my neck lift procedure?

Your exact procedure will vary based on your cosmetic concerns. A neck lift usually takes two to three hours to perform. Traditionally, the procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from underneath the jawline, as well as tightening the neck muscles to correct neck bands (also known as “rings of venus”) using a corset platysmaplasty technique. This involves stitching the muscles. Your neck lift incision will be well hidden beneath your chin and behind your ears, so it will not be obvious to others that you had surgery. A neck lift is often done in conjunction with facelift surgery so that the neck and lower face are in harmony. The extent of your procedure may vary based on your treatment plan.

What should I expect during neck lift recovery?

Discomfort is minimal after a neck lift and may be eased with pain medications as directed. Most patients return to work in one to two weeks after surgery. If you had a neck lift along with other procedures at the same time, it may prolong your recovery.

Swelling and tightness are common after surgery. This is temporary and will resolve in weeks to months. Bruising may also occur. Your bandages will be removed during your first follow-up visit. Walking is encouraged, but you should avoid strenuous activity for approximately six weeks.

When will I see my neck lift results?

Firmer, tighter, and more youthful skin is in your future with a neck lift. You will notice a more contoured neck, chin, and jawline immediately. However, it takes a few months to see the full effects. The results of your neck lift can last up to a decade or more.
