Selecting your plastic surgeon
The skill and aesthetic eye of your surgeon will be the most important factor in the safety and success of your nose reconstruction. Insist on a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in rhinoplasty. Your surgeon should answer all of your questions completely and should be eager to show you “before and after” pictures of previous nose reconstruction patients.
Are you a candidate for rhinoplasty?
Non-smokers who are in good general health are preferred candidates. If you have a bleeding disorder, you may not be eligible for rhinoplasty. During your consultation, we will review your medical history and help you determine if rhinoplasty is safe for you.
Risks and side effects
All surgeries—including rhinoplasty—carry risks. Risks for rhinoplasty include infection, excessive bleeding, allergic reactions to medications and materials, and complications from anesthesia. Rhinoplasty poses additional procedure-specific risks such as excessive scarring, nosebleeds, facial numbness, and breathing difficulties. The rhinoplasty specialists at The Michael Horn Center for Cosmetic Surgery understand these risks and create surgery plans to minimize them.
Costs will vary depending on the nature and extent of your customized rhinoplasty. If your surgery is performed for medical reasons (like perhaps breathing difficulties) your insurance may cover some or all of the costs. But if the procedure is purely cosmetic, insurance will not pay.
Preparing for your rhinoplasty
Your surgeon will carefully review your medical history, including previous surgeries. You will probably need to have some basic pre-surgical lab work done. Your doctor will direct you to suspend the use of any supplements or medications (like aspirin) that can elevate bleeding.
Communication between your doctor and you is vitally important. Your surgeon will take photographs of your face from multiple views. These pictures can help your doctor give you a good idea of what your nose may look like after rhinoplasty.
Your Rhinoplasty procedure
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure. You should be able to go home after your surgery, but make sure you’ve arranged for a ride home. Once you have been prepped for surgery and given your anesthesia, your doctor will begin your procedure. There is no “set” sequence or technique since each nose surgery is “one of a kind,” based on your goals and nasal anatomy.
Your doctor may harvest cartilage from your ear or from deep inside your nose. Other surgeries may require that cartilage be removed from your ribs or that bone be taken from other parts of your body. These tissues are used to reshape the structure of your nose. Your surgeon will close your incisions with sutures. Stabilizing splints may also be inserted into your nose.
You will be cleared to have someone take you home following your surgery, typically within the same day.
Your Rhinoplasty recovery
After about a week following your surgery, your doctor will remove any stitches and splints. Until your bandages have been removed, take showers rather than baths. You will experience some bruising, swelling, and maybe some slight post-operative bleeding and drainage for up to three weeks.
Typically, you can go back to work or school in a week. But it’s a good idea to avoid strenuous activity for several weeks as determined by your doctor. Wait until you have healed to blow your nose. Don’t rest your eyeglasses on your nose for about a month to preserve the benefits of your surgery.
Even small alterations in the structure of your nose can make a big difference in its appearance. Be aware that our noses change naturally as we age. If you desire additional surgery, you must wait at least a year.
